Wishing you a huge congrats if you’re recently engaged or planning to get married soon! I know wedding planning is in full swing for some (including myself) for weddings this year. On top of wedding planning we’re also in full honeymoon planning mode. Cory and I are planning to take our honeymoon a few months after we get married (I’ll share more about the destination soon), but we still want to head somewhere for a couple of nights after the wedding. So up north we go! If you’re considering spending your honeymoon in Traverse City, Glen Arbor, Leland, or Suttons Bay here’s a helpful guide of places to stay, spots to eat and fun things to do.
Where to Stay
If you’re looking for a great place to stay in Leelanau County here are some of my suggestions for couples:
Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
If you’re looking to be close to downtown Traverse City you can’t go wrong with the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. The resort is just a quick drive to the downtown area, and also close to Old Mission Peninsula for wine tasting – cheers! The resort offers golf and an outdoor pool during the summer months which is a great way to spend time together and relax. And let’s not forget about the incredible spa for some ultimate relaxation.
The Leland Lodge
I absolutely love Leland for the fish, the shopping and the relaxed vibe. If this sounds like you then check out The Leland Lodge. With cozy rooms and a short walk to town or Van’s Beach this is a perfect spot to truly enjoy some r&r.
The Homestead
My family has always enjoyed staying at The Homestead during the summer. I’ve been staying here since I was really young and have such fond memories every time we take the drive into the resort. For a honeymoon at The Homestead they offer different room options depending on what you’re looking for as well as amenities like golf or the spa. You can also enjoy a short drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pyramid Point or Glen Lake.
Where to Wine & Dine
Looking for some great spots to celebrate your honeymoon? Here are some of my favorite restaurants in Leelanau County:
Boathouse Restaurant
Cory and I both love the food and ambiance at the Boathouse Restaurant. With gorgeous views of the water from the shores of Bowers Harbor it really is such a fun spot to celebrate. We always order the smoked whitefish pate (trust me it’s amazing).
Bella Fortuna North
If Italian food is more your thing you have to check out Bella Fortuna North in Suttons Bay. The food and the service are always top notch and it’s truly one of our favorite spots. The fresh fish is my go-to and the panzanella salad is so fresh.
Blu
Located in Glen Arbor you can’t miss Blu for delicious food and panoramic views of Sleeping Bear Bay. With a focus on local ingredients the menu changes daily to reflect what’s in season. For your honeymoon this is a great spot to celebrate.
Trattoria Stella
If you’re staying near Traverse City you have to try Trattoria Stella. The cozy atmosphere paired with incredible Italian food is the recipe for perfection in celebrating your marriage. With pasta made in-house and attention to detail with fresh ingredients you’ll love Trattoria Stella.
Things to Do
Let’s be honest after your wedding day all you’re probably looking to do is sleep in, lay by the beach and most importantly relax. But, if you’re looking to try something new or adventurous here are some suggestions.
Kayak the Crystal River
One of our favorite summer activities in Glen Arbor is kayaking the Crystal River at Crystal River Outfitters. Even if you’re not an experienced kayaker, trust me you can do this. It’s a fun way to spend a couple of hours exploring the beauty of the river.
Go Wine Tasting
Love wine? Check out this guide to wine tasting that I recently wrote.
Take a Hike
There are so many incredible trails and beaches in northern Michigan that can’t be missed. We love Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pyramid Point Trail for some picturesque views.
I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing honeymoon up north! Feel free to leave a comment with some of your suggestions!
