We recently got back from our trip to Denver, Colorado and I can’t wait to share some details about our trip. This was my first time visiting Denver and Cory’s first visit to Colorado. I’ve been to Vail & Beaver Creek with my family, and spent time in Fort Collins with a friend. But, Denver has been at the top of our list to visit and I’m so happy we finally made it happen. Some of you mentioned you have future travel plans to Denver, CO and wanted recommendations for places to stay and things to do. Well you’ve come to the right place because I’m excited to share all the details about our Denver weekend getaway!
Where We Stayed – HALCYON, a Hotel in Cherry Creek
When I plan I trip I always start with researching hotels. I found HALCYON, a Hotel in Cherry Creek and loved the location and style of the rooms. In full disclosure they offered me a media rate for our stay, but as always all opinions are my own.
The Rooms
The rooms at Halcyon are spacious, comfortable and the decor makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. Each room has a door mat with a fun saying that instantly puts a smile on your face. I really enjoyed the contemporary decor, and the vinyl record player was a big hit. Also, each room has a Nespresso machine (my favorite), a yoga mat and Jonathan Adler products in the bathroom. Any hotel that has cozy robes also gets an A+ from me.
You’ll find seven different room types at HALCYON, a hotel in Cherry Creek. This is great to have options depending on who you’re traveling with. Click this link to check out the different rooms and suites available.
The Amenities
The number one thing I loved about staying at Halcyon were the amenities. Cory and I continually commented that this hotel really delivers on the experience and going the extra mile. FYI Halcyon charges a daily Destination Amenity Fee of $35 plus tax per room, per day but let me tell you it’s totally worth it. You can learn more about the Destination Amenities here.
Each guest floor has a Nook offering complimentary sparkling (yes please!) and still water, fresh fruit and periodicals. We really enjoyed not having to worry about buying bottled water while we staying at Halcyon. It was very easy to fill up our water bottle in the morning and afternoon at the Nook on our guest floor.
The Kitchen Counter
Halcyon has an untraditional front desk called the Kitchen Counter which is open 24/7. You can obviously check in/check out at the Kitchen Counter, but you’ll find more here as well. They offer handmade espresso, cappuccino, latte and coffee all day long which is so nice. We loved coming down here in the morning to get a cup of coffee and enjoy a complimentary baked treat. How amazing is that?!
The Kitchen Counter also offers a selection of house wines and local beer every evening from 3-6 PM. Cheers! You can learn more about the Kitchen Counter here.
Gear Garage
Another amenity we loved at Halcyon was the Gear Garage. Halcyon offers complimentary outdoor equipment, board games, New Belgium cruiser bikes, Go Pros and more for guests to use during their stay. Obviously there are a lot of outdoor options to experience in Denver, and the Gear Garage has all the right equipment to make the most of your time outdoors. Cory and I loved using the New Belgium cruiser bikes to explore the Cherry Creek area.
Rooftop Pool & Elevated Rooftop Bar
Let’s not forget about the rooftop pool and Elevated Rooftop Bar at Halcyon! We had kinda chilly weather while visiting Denver, but we still spent time on the rooftop to enjoy the Denver skyline views. On clear days you can also get great views of the Colorado Rocky Mountains from the rooftop pool. PS you can rent cabanas up here as well which would be really fun if you’re traveling with friends.
If you don’t want to swim you can check out Elevated for a drink or light bites while you’re at Halcyon. They have a great cocktail list and amazing views up here! This would be a good spot to enjoy happy hour with friends or an evening cocktail on your Denver weekend getaway.
Dining at HALCON, a Hotel in Cherry Creek
You’ll find three options for dining at Halcyon – Local Jones, Elevated Rooftop Bar (which I mentioned above), and Quality Italian. It’s so nice when you’re staying at a hotel to have great options for dining. Cory and I were invited to have dinner at Local Jones, but again all opinions are my own.
Local Jones
At Local Jones they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily plus brunch on Saturday and Sunday. This is really the perfect restaurant for families, a date night or meeting up with friends or co-workers. The space is gorgeous inside and they also offer outdoor seating. The menus and drink options are great because there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I also really liked the upscale feel, but relaxed ambiance at Local Jones.
Cory and I started our dinner with the LJ Caesar salad which was delicious. We really like Caesar salads and this one ranks pretty high on our list with sourdough crumb croutons and parmesan dressing. We also started with the beet hummus which was so good! The beet hummus had such a pretty color, and tasted amazing with the warm house made flatbread and veggies.
For my main entree I ordered the crispy salmon. I LOVE salmon and this dish was delicious with the crispy skin and fingerling potatoes. Cory ordered the New York strip which came with a really nice ramp butter and the best fries ever. When we come back to Denver we’ll definitely dine here again!
I huge thank you to everyone at HALCYON, a Hotel in Cherry Creek for making us feel so welcome. I honestly would recommend staying here if you’re traveling to Denver, CO. I know Cory and I will definitely be back!
Denver Weekend Getaway – Things to Do
If you’re looking for suggestions for things to do in Denver I’ve got you covered. Here are some of the best things we did while we were in Denver.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
Cory and I really enjoyed driving the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. This is a great family activity to see amazing wildlife. You take your car through the refuge and you can listen to a podcast that guides you through the different landmarks. We saw prairie dogs, bison, deer and songbirds when we drove through the wildlife refuge.
Since it was raining one afternoon we decided to check out the Denver Art Museum. We had a really amazing time walking around and seeing the exhibits. I would highly recommend checking out this museum while you’re in Denver.
While the weather was nice we explored the Denver Botanic Gardens. If you’re staying at Halcyon they offer day passes to the Denver Botanic Gardens. Or if you’re local to Grand Rapids and a member of Meijer Gardens they have reciprocal admission here. This is a great place to bring kids or just enjoy the nice weather!
If you’re looking for some shopping or food check out the Dairy Block. This was a fun part of town with great shopping and pretty string lights.
We also liked Denver Central Market for lunch. You’ll find many different vendors with food options that are great for lunch or a snack.
Take a walk through Union Station and grab a bite to eat or a drink from one of the restaurants. We had lunch at Ultreia and enjoyed sitting outside.
If you love Italian food we loved Tavernetta for dinner. This is a popular restaurant so make sure you make a reservation!
Take a drive to Red Rocks Amphitheater. We saw Lord Huron while we were in Denver and it was such an amazing experience.
What are some of your favorite things to do for a Denver weekend getaway?
