After living in Chicago for 5 years I frequently get asked where to eat, what to do and where to stay in the city. Because Chicago is a perfect weekend getaway from Grand Rapids I put together a little guide to Chicago with places I love. From dining to hotels I’ve included some classic spots and some of the current hot spots in the city so you can get a taste of what makes Chicago so great. Scroll down for my guide to Chicago!
My Guide to Chicago
Stay:
Public Hotel – Located in the heart of the Gold Coast you will love the attention to detail and modern touches at Public Hotel. This hotel has a long history, and you can’t beat the location being close to the lake, shopping and some of the hottest restaurants.
Hotel Lincoln – I loved living in Lincoln Park and this hotel is great option for staying in more of a “neighborhood” type setting. Just minutes from Lincoln Park Zoo, Second City and the beach this is a perfect hotel choice. Also see below for more details on their amazing rooftop the J. Parker.
LondonHouse – If you want to stay downtown book LondonHouse. You can’t beat the location being right by the river and the city views are phenomenal. The staff is super helpful in making sure you have a great stay and don’t forget to check out the rooftop for some of the best views of Chicago (see below).
Chicago Athletic Association – Located in the loop the Chicago Athletic Association is one of the hot spots in the city. The history of this building is quite amazing and the details in the architecture are stunning. With close proximity to Millennium Park and the Art Institute this is a great option for staying downtown Chicago. Also, don’t miss out on their rooftop views of the park and Lake Michigan from Cindy’s.
Drink:
The Violet Hour – It might take you a minute or two to find the Violet Hour (you won’t see a sign), but trust me the hunt is totally worth it. These cocktails in Wicker Park are the real deal and the decor absolutely gorgeous. I also appreciate a bar that has a no cell phone policy, no Budweiser and no baseball hats #winning.
Three Dots and a Dash – This bar is also not easy to find, but Three Dots and a Dash is a fun experience if you’re downtown. When you walk into this bar you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a tropical island and the cocktails will give you the true tiki experience. Sip slowly and enjoy a little escape from the city.
RM Champagne – As someone who loves champagne I’m partial to RM Champagne located in the West Loop. The cozy interior is a perfect escape from Chicago winters and the patio is ideal on a warm summer day. If you’re in the West Loop for dinner (the best options for amazing food) head to RM Champagne for a drink before or after dinner.
Rooftop Views:
LH Rooftop – LH Rooftop wins the award for best city views and if you don’t believe me you have to see it for yourself. Grab your friends and enjoy a cocktail while soaking in the cityscape views.
The J. Parker – The J. Parker was one of my favorite bars in my neighborhood and truly gives spectacular views of Lake Michigan and the city. This is a great spot to enjoy a speciality cocktail before dinner or an after dinner drink.
Cindy’s – You can’t beat the views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan from Cindy’s. The atmosphere of this rooftop is perfect for gathering your friends or family to savor a cocktail and the amazing view.
Drumbar – Located on top of the Raffaello Hotel you’ll find Drumbar with an indoor/outdoor bar. I’m obsessed with the vibe at Drumbar and the mix of old and new. You can’t go wrong with their craft cocktails and view of the skyscrapers.
Eat:
Mon Ami Gabi – If you want a little taste of Paris in Chicago head over to Mon Ami Gabi. This restaurant was close to my apartment so it was always my go-to spot for happy hour, dinner or a late night drink. The warm baguette bread, shrimp cocktail and creme brûlée are my absolute favorite.
The Publican – Located in the West Loop you’ll find The Publican that pays homage to oysters, pork and beer (it doesn’t get much better than that). Don’t miss out on their bread and awesome seafood dishes like the skate wing and cuttlefish ink pasta.
Bavette’s Bar and Bouf – If you’re looking for a cozy atmosphere and incredible food you can’t go wrong with Bavette’s. You’ll want to make a reservation before booking your trip to Chicago since this restaurant isn’t very big and tables fill up fast. Don’t leave without trying the baked goat cheese and elote style corn.
Piccolo Sogno – For a taste of Italy and some of the best pasta in the city make a reservation at Piccolo Sogno. The atmosphere will make you think you’ve flown to Italy and the menu is spectacular. The pasta is super fresh and the antipasti items are perfect for sharing with a group.
The Hampton Social – If you’re looking for a fun lunch spot I would highly recommend The Hampton Social. You’ll feel like you’re in East Hampton sipping rose and enjoying a lobster roll when dining here. This is a great spot for a girls weekend in the city.
Brunch:
3 Arts Club Cafe – The 3 Arts Club Cafe is actually part of Restoration Hardware so be prepared to be inspired for your home while eating a delicious brunch with a mimosa. The space will leave you in awe and it’s a fun spot to catch up with friends and get some design ideas for your home (that chandelier is so beautiful).
The Allis – If you’re near the West Loop I can’t get enough of The Allis. Located inside Soho House this space is perfect for quick breakfast or a chance to relax and try a light bite or afternoon tea.
The Bristol – I can’t get enough of The Bristol brunch. Located near Wicker Park this restaurant does brunch right with local ingredients and an amazing bloody mary.
More Things I Love:
The cookies at Summer House Santa Monica
A donut from Stan’s
An afternoon at Lincoln Park Zoo (PS it’s FREE)
Taking the CTA (trust me this is super easy and will make you feel like a local)
Pizza at Giordano’s (forget Lou Malnati’s and Gino’s)
A Saturday morning at the Green City Market
I hope you enjoyed my guide to Chicago! Let me know some of your favorite places in the city. You can also check out my guide to East Lansing.
