In case you missed it on Instagram we’re renovating our kitchen (and dining room)! Cory and I are SO excited to cook and entertain in a new kitchen next month. I wanted to share more about why we’re doing this project, and show you some before photos in this blog post. Stay tuned for more blog posts along the way showing the design and of course some after photos. I really can’t wait to share this project with you from beginning to end. You can also visit my Instagram story highlights to see some of the progress that’s been happening along the way.
Why We’re Renovating the Kitchen
When I bought this house four years ago I had every intention of starting this kitchen renovation right away. As you can see from the photos our current kitchen has limited counter space, no dishwasher (or garbage disposal), and very little storage. This house was built in the late 1930’s and has some charming quirks that we both love (like the built-in nook below), but the kitchen was becoming a challenge. For us to cook together we couldn’t open the refrigerator or the oven at the same time. It was definitely time for a change.
Cory and I plan to stay in this house for at least another three years so with that in mind we decided a renovation was the next step. We love our neighborhood, proximity to downtown Grand Rapids and architectural details in this home. So, making it work better for the both of us starts with renovating the kitchen.
Pinterest vs. Reality
The first place we started gathering ideas was Pinterest. Keeping in mind our small kitchen we scrolled through different layouts and options that we thought worked best for our space. What we quickly learned (after working with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio) was sometimes things you see on Pinterest don’t quite measure up to reality. For example, a refrigerator in the corner is great, but putting it right against the wall doesn’t give you enough clearance to fully open the door or drawers inside.
I would definitely use Pinterest to find your ideal style and things you really love for your new kitchen. But, keep in mind that some style details you find might not work for your space. Showing a designer your ideas can help them start a design that works best for your needs and the function of your kitchen. There were so many elements we didn’t think about or even consider until working with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio. More than once Cory and I looked at each other and said “I never would have thought about that.” You want to make the most out of your space (especially when it comes to your kitchen) by working with a designer. Trust me on this.
Working with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio
Partnering with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio has been absolutely amazing. I was first introduced to Lifestyle Kitchen Studio at a shopping event they hosted in their studio in downtown Grand Rapids. As I was shopping, I couldn’t help but notice the stunning designs and creative kitchen layouts in their showroom. It obviously got me thinking about renovating my own kitchen someday.
Fast forward a year later and Holly and Kristina from Lifestyle Kitchen Studios reached out with an idea for a partnership to renovate my kitchen. I want to be completely transparent about this collaboration, and remind you how much thought and consideration goes into any type of partnership I do on The GR Guide. Lifestyle Kitchen Studios offered design time, and hand-selected partnerships with their vendors that were the best fit for our kitchen and price point. We are still paying for a portion of our kitchen with our own money, and received discounts on products and complimentary design services as part of this partnership.
I’m SO glad Cory and I didn’t try to DIY our kitchen (yes, we literally had a plan in place from a big box store). Working with a designer is the best thing you can do for your own sanity and getting the most out of your kitchen. Holly, Kristina and Kelly have been incredible to work with, and we really appreciate their design expertise. We’ve truly learned from this experience that working with a designer is the way to go.
Why We Love Lifestyle Kitchen Studio
Working with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio is truly a one-stop-shop when you start a renovation. When we considered doing our kitchen from a big box store it was overwhelming to think about all the different elements like lighting, cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and hardware. When you work with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio they have the ability to design and order all of these finish materials within the studio. How awesome is that? They take your Pinterest ideas and turn them into reality by designing a kitchen that best fits your space and price point. For us this was such an easier process working with Lifestyle Kitchen Studio, and provided much less stress when renovating our kitchen.
Our project really reflects the best use of our space and style while showcasing suppliers that are all available to purchase through Lifestyle Kitchen Studio. Because Lifestyle Kitchen Studio offers design, materials and job site support they are able to integrate all aspects of the project. I can’t tell you how much Cory and I really appreciate and feel at ease because of the support and ideas from Lifestyle Kitchen Studio.
Are We Living At Home During the Renovation?
I’ve had so many people reach out on Instagram asking if we’re staying in our house for this renovation. The answer is no. I’ve heard of many people setting up a mini refrigerator in the living room or eating out every night during a kitchen renovation. But, for us this wasn’t an option since the floors were being re-finished throughout the house. Also, Cory and I both work from home and Wrigley hates any type of loud noises. We are currently living with my Grandma who lives very close to our house so we can still stop by daily to see the progress. Cory and I are very fortunate to have this as an option, and we’ve really spending time with my Grandma.
If you’re hesitant to start a renovation because it would disrupt your daily life I can totally relate. There’s never a great time to start a renovation and it will always be a slight inconvenience. But, I can tell you it will be 100% worth it in the end.
