Starting a book club last year was truly a highlight of 2021. I’ve always enjoyed reading, but the past few I just couldn’t find the time to pick up reading. It’s been fun to read again and discuss some books with you on IG Live each month. I wanted to do a round-up of books I’ve read the past few months and also see what you’re currently reading. Please leave a comment below with some of your favorite books or what you’re currently reading. PS you can also follow me on Goodreads!
Books I’ve Recently Read
The Love Hypothesis – If you’re looking for a romcom/romance novel check out The Love Hypothesis. This book follows the romance of Olive and Adam, and a lot of twists and turns along the way. I found some aspects of this book to be unrealistic, but all in all it was an easy read and great for a vacation book. It’s great that the author Ali Hazelwood focuses on women in STEM and academia professions with the characters in her books. I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
The Paper Palace – I was super excited to read The Paper Palace because I heard it was really good. Maybe I set extra high expectations for this book. but I just wasn’t my favorite. I found parts of the book upsetting, and it was like being on a roller coaster and I just wanted to get off the ride. Do you know what I mean? I’m giving this book 2 out of 5 stars.
The Dinner List – The Dinner List was just an average book. I enjoyed some parts of this book and found other parts kinda boring and slightly sad. It didn’t hold my attention and I had to force myself to finish the book. This book gets a 3 out of 5 stars.
The Maidens – If you’re a fan of suspense and mystery novels you’ll enjoy The Maidens. I loved Alex Michaelides other book The Silent Patient, so I was really excited to read The Maidens. This book had be guessing until the end and I couldn’t put this book down. I think I enjoyed The Silent Patient more than The Maidens, but this was still a good book. I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Book Club Books
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – I just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for our January book club. I couldn’t put this book down, and I just adore the writing from Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book had a captivating story line, and I’m really looking forward to discussing this book with you on IG Live. If you haven’t read Daisy Jones and the Six or Malibu Rising (also by Taylor Jenkins Reid) I would also add these books to your reading list. I would give The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
One Day in December – We read One Day in December for our December book club pick. This book is also a wonderful romcom/romance novel, and both Kelli and I really enjoyed this one. Some romcom novels focus on “girl met guy” and launch into their predictable romance. This book gave a little more substance to the characters and wasn’t a typical love story which I enjoyed. This book gets a 4 out of 5 stars.
The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue – This was another book that took me quite awhile to get into it. I found the beginning and middle to be a little slow, but once it got going I was hooked. I enjoyed the message behind The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue, and liked the development of characters in this book. Kelli and I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars for our November book club.
We Begin at the End – Kelli and I read We Begin at the End for our October book club pick. What I enjoyed about this book was the character development, and what I didn’t enjoy was the slow start to the book. This book took me awhile to get into it, but I loved the ending. I’m giving this book 3 out of 5 stars.
Currently Reading
The Summer Cottage – I’m currently reading The Summer Cottage by Viola Shipman. This book takes place in both Chicago and Saugatuck so it’s fun relating to the places and restaurants mentioned. If you enjoy Hallmark movies and The Gilmore Girls that’s how I envision this book. The main character starts an inn in Saugatuck and it reminds me of Lorelai Gilmore. So far I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.
Beach Read – You guys know how much I enjoyed People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry last year. Her first book Beach Read has been on my to-read list for quite awhile. My sister recently read Beach Read and said I definitely need to read it while in Florida. I’m really excited to read this book on the beach next week.
