Did you know today is National Make a Friend Day? As someone who’s lived in a new city, I know the struggles of making friends as an adult. Whether you’re new to the area or just looking to make more friends, here are some easy tips for finding friends. Let me know if you have any other tips to add!
Join a Book Club
If you enjoy reading, why not join a book club? I had a book club while I was living in Chicago, and it was a great way to meet new people. We continually added people to our group each month which widened my friend group. And, instead of meeting at each other’s homes we would pick a new restaurant to try and then discuss the book. This was a great way to experience the city and try something new. Even if you don’t totally love reading or enjoy the book choices, trust me this is an easy way to introduce yourself to people.
Try New Things
Don’t be afraid to try something new! Is there a sports team you can join or a volunteer opportunity you haven’t done before? Getting out of your comfort zone opens the door to meeting new people. This definitely isn’t an easy thing to do, but trying something new can introduce you to different people.
Reach out on Social Media
I think social media is a great resource for finding new friends. I’ve connected with bloggers in both Chicago and Grand Rapids through Instagram. Reach out via direct message to meet for coffee or a drink and you never know if you’ve met a lifelong friend. I love to see social media connect people together!
Connect With Co-Workers
If your co-workers invite you out for lunch or a coffee break don’t hesitate to say yes. Sometimes when you work with someone 9-5 it’s hard to connect with them on a friend level. Taking the time to talk with the people you work with can really give you the opportunity to make new friends.
Take a Class
Interested in cooking or yoga or art? Make a list of things you’re interested in and find classes or workshops you can do. Chances are you’ll meet others that share your interests while doing something you enjoy.
