How many times do you check your phone through the day? Do you feel like you have to post something on social media just because? Felling lost if your phone isn’t sitting right beside you? I’ve been meaning to write this post for awhile now, and as a blogger or social media influencer you might think I’m kidding. But, with summer coming up I wanted to share some tips to help you forget to check your phone. Let’s enjoy our Michigan summer that we wait all year for. Soak up every minute in the sun (with sunscreen of course), run through the grass, feel the sand beneath your toes and capture the sunsets through your eyes instead of a camera lens.
Tip #1: Set A Screen Time App Limit on Your Phone
Did you know you can set a time limit on your iPhone for different apps? I obviously am a sucker for Instagram and social media in general so I’ve set a time limit for myself each day. Now, I’ll be totally honest that some days I ignore the limit but it does hold me accountable. Start with a reasonable time limit to make your goal achievable.
Tip #2: Don’t Keep Your Phone in the Bedroom
I started keeping my phone in Cory’s office at night instead of on my nightstand and let me tell you this made a huge difference. I wasn’t scrolling Instagram before bed, anxious about checking emails or dealing with the dreaded blue light before bed. If you use your phone as an alarm try ordering a simple alarm clock for your nightstand.
Tip #3 Keep Certain Times of the Day Phone Free
I used to check my phone first thing in the morning to see if I had any texts or emails. Now I enjoy a bowl of cereal and cup of coffee while watching the Today show for at least 45 minutes before grabbing my phone. Maybe try making meals a no phone zone or 1 hour before bed.
Tip #4 Just Say No To Multiple Screens
I’m guilty of watching a TV show and also scrolling my phone (I’m sure I’m not alone in this). My friend shared that she was saying no to multiple screens and I thought it was brilliant. If you’re watching the TV just watch the TV. If you’re on your phone just be on your phone. There’s no need to have so much going on in front of you.
Tip #5 Enjoy Yourself
I love Instagram, I love taking photos and I love working on The GR Guide. But, I think we can all benefit from a few extra minutes not scrolling or shopping on our phones. I hope you just enjoy yourself this summer, and if you forget about your phone every so often that’s awesome. Just enjoy those new memories and tell someone about it instead of posting about.
